Honestly, we couldn't imagine our kitchen without wax paper, which has been a household staple since 1927. And since its been around for so long, we've had a lot of time to figure out some alternative uses for the stuff. Here are a few of our favorite ideas:

1. Ban fingerprints from your faucet.

Chrome finishes are stunning, but prone to water stains and fingerprints. A quick wipe down with wax paper will leave a thin film of waxy residue on the surface and help ward off those annoying marks.

2. Fail-proof your cake decorating.

Writing "Happy Birthday" in icing across the top of an almost-complete cake is super nerve-wracking — one slip up and all your hard work is a total waste. Less stressful? Pipe chocolate onto a piece of wax paper, then throw it in the freezer for 30 minutes. Once firm, loosen the letters and place them on top.

3. Create a makeshift pot lid.

Sharon Franke, director of the Kitchen Appliances and Technology Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute, says wax paper can be used as a pot lid when you want a cover that doesn't fittoo tightly. Just cut out a circle that will fit inside the pot, then snip the center so steam can escape. (Tip: This works great with carrots.)

4. Uncork bottles struggle-free.

If you don't finish your bottle of wine in one sitting, wrap the cork with wax paper to make it easier to remove a second (or third) time. This will also help prevent bits of cork from breaking off and swimming in  your drink.

5. Maintain the antenna on your car.

Most new vehicles have antennas that retract when you turn your engine off — meaning they drag filth into the car when they do so, which is not good for your reception. Instead, Lewis Heayns, a Test Engineer for the Good Housekeeping Institute, says you can rub it with wax paper to give it a protective coating that will repel dirt.

6. Flatten chicken breasts.

Before you to go pound town on your chicken breasts or veal to create cutlets, Franke recommends placing wax paper between your pieces of protein — the waxy material doesn't stick, but stays in place and is easy to maneuver.

7. Improve your ironing.

According to the director of the Cleaning Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute, Carolyn Forte, a quick rub of wax paper on your iron will help it glide more smoothly — but it's not a permanent fix. If you're constantly struggling to move the iron across fabric, it's time to invest in a new one.

8. Keep your microwave clean.

While spaghetti and meatballs taste better piping hot, it doesn't look pretty when more sauce ends up on the inside of your microwave than in your mouth. Franke recommends covering your plate with a piece of wax paper beforehand to prevent making a mess.

9. Jar spices without spilling.

If you want to transfer your coriander and paprika from its original container to a cuter one that matches your collection, wrap a sheet of wax paper together to create a funnel so you can rebottle 'em without losing any.

10. Protect table linens from candles.

If you store all of your table setting essentials together, Forte recommends wrapping your colored candles in wax paper first — this way color won't rub off on your tablecloths and napkins.

11. Line cabinets and drawers.

For easy cleanup in your kitchen storage areas, line the bottom surfaces with wax paper — then you can just swipe it up or, when it's really dirty, replace it entirely when you're cleaning. Keep 'em in place with a little double-stick tape.
